Day two of the Winter Music Conference 2000 exploded as 20,000 musicians, artists, dj's, industry reps and fans collided head on at the Radisson Deauville in South Miami Beach. While industry giants closed deals over cocktails inside at the bar, crowds of amazing artists mingled around the pool. Every hand in sight was busy exchanging promos, mix tapes, white labels and business cards, while overall, the entire area remained besmitten by a blizzard of flyers.
RadioValve hit the crowd like a delicious spooge of Gulden's yellow mustard wearing fluorescent yellow radiation suits and toting mobile web-casting equipment. Dominating the apex of the pool patio, the whole crew pitched in to setup a virtual studio for distributing flyers, business cards, SPANKollektiv mix tapes and hosting interviews with interesting attendees, notable producers and artists, promoters, DJs, and as many scantily clad lovely Floridian women who dared speak to "those Devo guys"...The RadioValve road crew consisted of resident "Hip-Tuggin" DJs Charlie Koval and Damon Willard as well as SPANKollektiv manager Bruce Wilson, program director E23 and technical/juggling guru, Coredump.
Following a magnificent day in the Florida sun, schmoozing with innumerable influences and idols, the RV crew regrouped for dinner at the alien yet entertaining Italian-Cubano eatery, Casona de Carlitos in South Beach. Immediately following, everyone strolled down to the lounge-o-licious GrooveJet bar for the Urb party. The interior of the open-air venue dripped with acidelic visuals and bumped with thumping house and drum'n'bass beats. While LTJ Bukem was listed as one of the hottest headliners, he never played because some scab lifted his records just before the set. Damn shame.
Otherwise representing were excellent sets by Kid Loco, MC Question Mark and Mark Farina, among numerous others. Around the bar mixing with the Miami club kids were artists like Roni Size and Smith & Mighty. E23 and Coredump roamed the room giving interviews to everyone in sight including Mark Farina, MC Question Mark, Rob Smith and Louise of Smith and Mighty, and Erik Zilinek of TheSkinny.com...more to come. |
